I loved the book of the same name, by Canadian author Annabel Lyon, and sort of threw another great "middle way" philosopher into the mix.
lyrics
Golden Mean
As Aristotle counseled Alexander
and said “your only real conquest lies inside”
but Alexander could not fathom Nagarjuna
and so before his time
a broken man he died
and like any child soldier
who’s damaged far beyond repair
sent into the battlefield
and broken there
broken there
Oh Golden Mean
Oh Golden Mean
you’re as elusive
as all our worldly dreams
surrounded there by all your wives and daughters
who cannot shield you from their scorn
where happiness should follow like a shadow
but in your anger
that shadow’s never born
And like any gifted student
who ventures wise beyond her years
pride deceives her
leaves her wide open
devoid of fears
devoid of fears
Oh Golden Mean
Oh Golden Mean
you’re as elusive as our worldly dreams
And Oh
you won’t see that child again
Oh, no you won’t see that child again
It pains you there
to see your charge defeated
like words upon a page that no one reads
but that won’t change the sun that warms the landscape
and that won’t change
imagined histories
like any unfinished story
that lends itself to fantasy so well
a thousand twists
a thousand endings
that you’ll never tell
you’ll never tell
Oh Golden Mean
Oh Golden Mean
You’re as elusive
as all our worldly dreams
